24 years in Vice City.

A return to neon streets, familiar voices, and the little board at Sunshine Autos that sent us all over the city.

The Anniversary Film

Back to the city.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City arrived on PlayStation 2 in North America on October 29, 2002. Twenty-four years later, its 1980s atmosphere and cast remain part of its identity.

For this anniversary, we revisit a few details: a connection to Miami Vice, Ray Liotta’s Tommy Vercetti, and the wanted-vehicle lists at Sunshine Autos.

Our collecting search follows the music: the original complete seven-CD Vice City Official Soundtrack Box Set.

The Photo Essay

Five frames from Vice City.

A familiar voice from Miami.

Philip Michael Thomas played Detective Rico Tubbs in Miami Vice and voiced Lance Vance in Vice City. Ray Liotta voices Tommy Vercetti, as credited in the original PS2 manual.

That Sunshine Autos board.

Four lists. Six vehicles on each. The import garage turned the city into a scavenger hunt: deliveries paid cash, while completed lists unlocked reward vehicles and increased the dealership’s daily income.

The board in our third slide is an original-game screenshot, with its source watermark retained.
