On This Day Video Games

Super Nintendo.
One launch, three dates.

Thirty-five years later, the box, the opening games and the retail paper trail still have a story to tell.

The original anniversary film 16 seconds, silent. Created for the August 23 anniversary; explore each frame at your own pace below.

The Anniversary Film

The date has a story.

The Super Nintendo arrived in the United States in 1991 with Super Mario World in the box. Its arrival unfolded over several dates.

Contemporary reports place early Southern California stock as far back as August 21. August 23 became the remembered launch date, recorded by Electronic Gaming Monthly. Nationwide availability followed on September 9.

Our original August 23, 2026 feature marks thirty-five years since that remembered date. Its four slides preserve the distinction between early store arrivals, the anniversary and the national rollout.

The Photo Essay

The opening record, in four frames.

The first shelf.

Super Mario World, F-Zero and Pilotwings appear in the earliest retail accounts. SimCity and Gradius III round out the five-game launch-window group shown in the slides. The earliest shelf and the remembered launch lineup deserve their own place in the record.

The packaging belongs in the story.

A console records the design of the machine. Its packaging shows how it was introduced: the pictures, the bundled game and the promise made to a shopper in 1991. Manuals, inserts and dated retail material help connect that promise to the actual rollout.

What We’d Preserve

The complete Super Set.

Our final slide sets out the collecting focus: the retail box and foam, SNS-001 Control Deck and serial record, two SNS-005 controllers and cables, Super Mario World with its manual and inserts, and the early games, advertisements and retail paperwork.

The complete Super Set is a preservation goal for the Archive; the images here are historical references.
